A police vehicle exploded early on Wednesday while it was stationed at the intersection of Saad Zaghloul and Abu al-Hassen streets in Port Said. No casualties were reported.
Residents and store owners used fire extinguishers to put off the fire.
Civil protection vehicles and explosive experts arrived to the scene and security troops imposed a cordon around the area.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle had been parked for around two hours, adding that the blast took place from under the car from the side of the pavement, which the car was parked next to.
Police and military personnel have been targeted by attacks since the ouster of deposed president Mohamed Morsy in July 2013.
