The death toll has risen from 33 to 44 in the fatal collision which took place on Friday between two tour buses on the Sharm al-Sheikh-El-Tor road.
South Sinai prosecutors had decided to remand the two drivers pending their interrogation.
South Sinai Governor Khaled Fouda paid two visits to the wounded at Sharm al-Sheikh International Hospital. He said initial investigations point to human error, as one driver was allegedly speeding while the other was reportedly asleep at the wheel.
Fouda criticized some media outlets for suggesting terrorist involvement in the accident, arguing that the accident, though catastrophic, was a traffic accident. He said rumors of terrorism activity harms tourism in the region.
Among the injured were a 20-year-old Ukrainian woman, a 24-year-old Yemeni man, a 27-year-old Saudi woman and a two-year-old Saudi child, the province’s ambulance service said.
A report released in June by the Central Agency for Public Mobility and Statistics said the number of car accidents in Egypt reached 15,578 in 2013, up 0.4 percent from the previous year.
