Major General Abu Bakr Abdel Kareem, deputy interior minister for human rights, said on Sunday that there are no human rights violations in Egypt's prisons.
“Not a single political prisoner can be found at any prison,” he said. “Egyptian prisons are open for human rights organizations that want to ensure that there are no detainees, torture cases or ill-treatment.”
“The law allows police to impose rules and control whoever tries to break the law,” Abdel Kareem said in an interview with Al-Ghad al-Araby TV. “Police personnel are granted the right to defend themselves."
Abdel Kareem had earlier denied news over the presence of rape or physical violations inside prisons.
“News about raping girls and physical violations inside prisons is untrue,” he told the Turkish Anadolu Agency on Thursday.
