A poll by the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera) showed that only four percent of Egyptians regularly watch the World Cup, currently played in Brazil, while 14 percent watch the matches on and off.

A total of 79 percent of Egyptians did not watch the sporting event, while three percent said they do not know whether the matches they watch are part of the World Cup or not.

Maged Othman, head of the center, said the poll was conducted by landline and cell phone on a sample of 2,033 people above the age of 18 from 24-26 June.

About 29 percent of 18-29 year-olds watched the matches either regularly or irregularly, compared to 14 percent of viewers over 50.

Around 38 percent of Egyptians who watch the games support Brazil, 14 percent support Holland, 11 percent support Algeria and 8 percent support Germany.

Meanwhile, 44 percent of Egyptian World Cup fans watch the matches at home, 11 percent watch them at a friend's house, 43 percent watch the games at cafes and three percent watch them at other places.
