Minister: Archaeological weapons found under Mediterranean

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh al-Damaty said on Sunday several antique weapons were found deep under the Mediterranean near the entrance of the Alexandrian seaport.

The weapons range from rifles to guns, dating back to the 18th century.

The items were found during underwater scanning performed by the Russian mission, in collaboration with the ministry in search for the sunken vessels and wrecks of ancient harbors.

Indications show that the weapons were for one of the vessels of the French Campaign in Egypt, which sank while entering Western Alexandria harbour by then, the minister added. Such discovery would allow several studies in search for more archaeological discoveries, which contribute to more details and historic facts.

Mohamed Mostafa, head of sunken artifacts department, said the discovered items were transferred to the restoration center of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
