Prosecution, Brotherhood lawyers to challenge Minya Court death sentences

Public prosecution will appeal the verdict issued by Minya Criminal Court sentencing 183 persons including Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie to death, sources from the public prosecutor office said on Saturday

Minya Criminal Court sentenced on Saturday 182 Muslim Brotherhood supporters including the group’s supreme guide Mohamed Badie to death over riots in Adwa village in Minya, which followed dispersal of Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins in 2013.

In related news, Mohamed Tosson, head of defense of Muslim Brotherhood prisoners, said the defense will start procedures of challenging the verdict.

Sentences, according to Tosson, “violate rights of the suspects in presence of their lawyers, after court rejected presence of the lawyers during the investigations.” He added that law “stipulates presence of lawyer defending the suspect involved in crimes. In case the lawyer withdrew, court should order taking the measures and hiring another lawyer from the syndicate.”

Khaled Mohamed, member of the legal committee of Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) described the verdict as ‘illegal’ and called for refusing such rulings which ‘violate all standards.’
