African Union (AU)’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) will convene on Tuesday to reconsider the suspension of Egypt’s membership and its return to its historic role within the union, upon a report drafted by the Committee of the Wise on Egypt which stressed that there was misunderstanding about 30 June, describing it as a popular revolution.
Informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that representatives of 15 countries members of the council will meet in Addis Ababa on Tuesday to submit the committee’s report, expecting a decision to be issued after the meeting on return of Egypt to its normal and historic role within the union.
The sources referred to communications that took place over the past few days between Cairo and the member countries, referring to two phone calls made by Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and his Ugandan and Gambian counterparts.
Foreign Ministry commanded the report by the committee. “We have not checked the content of the report completely yet. We will mull its once we receive it immediately,” said Badr abdel Aaty, the ministry’s spokesperson.
AU suspended Egypt’s membership after ouster of former President Mohamed Morsy as a deviation from the democratic path.
Samir Hosny, head of the Arab League’s department on Africa, said Egypt will resume its activities within the African Union on 25 June during the PSC session on report on the recent developments in Egypt.
“There are strong indicators that Alpha Oumar Konare, chief of Africa’s Committee of the Wise, had drafted a strong report that supports Egypt’s steps taken since 30 June revolution,” Hosny said on Sunday.
Egypt will take part within the African Summit that on 26 and 27 June in Guinea.
