The National Movement Party, headed by former presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq, has collected 15,000 endorsements from party members to support former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for president, said party leader Marwan Younis.
Endorsements are by Sisi's fans to honor him, he added. Shafiq instructed party members to back Sisi as being the fittest to lead the country, Younis told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Shafiq issued a statement, Thursday, thanking those he described as Egypt's loyal sons who supported him in the 2012 presidential elections. Shafiq mentioned in the statement he did not run for this year's elections because the nation needed unity under the "extremely cruel and sensitive conditions."
