Cairo University spokesperson: President’s statement on sexual harassment incident was misunderstood

Gaber Nassar, university president, issued a statement that has been misunderstood over a sexual harassment incindent on campus, Cairo University spokespetson Abdel Ghaffar Shokr told OnTV Saturday morning.

A mass harassment incident of a woman took place on Cairo University campus a week ago sparking controversy in media and on social networking websites.

The university president had responded to the incident saying the student would not have been harrassed had she been wearing more conservative clothes, essentially blaming her for the attack.

Shokr affirmed the university administration has taken measures to confront harassment in the university through a protocol with a rights organization interested in the phenomenon. Organization activists would hold seminars to spread awareness of it, he said.

Media would be informed with the results of investigations in the recent sexual harassment incident after investigations are concluded, Shokr added.
