According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, three members of the Strong Egypt Party were sentenced on Tuesday to three years in prison and fined LE500 each for distributing leaflets calling on voters to vote against the Constitution last month.
Ahmed Imam, party spokesperson, had said before that members Mohamed Abu Leila, Ahmed Badawy and Sami Ashraf were arrested in Cairo during the referendum for distributing leaflets that expressed their objection to the Constitution.
The party, headed by former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, is known for opposing the return of deposed President Mohamed Morsy and army involvment in politics. It had initially said that it would vote against the Constitution, but then decided to boycott it when its members were arrested.
The new Constitution was approved by 98.1 percent of the voters.
