Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat met on Wednesday with Stavros Lambrinidis, the European Union human rights representative, to discuss reports raised by human rights organizations and published in Egyptian and foreign media about a number of prisoners having allegedly been exposed to physical and moral abuse.
Judicial sources said Barakat asserted that all prisoners have sufficient evidence available against them and that there are no political prisoners at all.
He also confirmed that the Public Prosecution is part of the judiciary in Egypt and that there are legal controls governing its work so that its decisions are issued in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code before ordinary courts, without any exception to the law.
