Clashes subside at Al-Azhar University, 94 students arrested

Clashes that had erupted between Brotherhood students of Al-Azhar University and police forces on Monday have subsided and the streets leading to the university have been re-opened.

Ninety-four pro-Muslim Brotherhood students at Al-Azhar University were sentenced to 15 days imprisonment pending investigation in two separate cases of riots in the vicinity of campus Saturday and Sunday.

Nasr City Prosecution sent 72 students, including 13 girls, to 15 days imprisonment on charges of committing acts of violence and riots during the Saturday protests at Al-Azhar.

The defendants were in possession of flyers with the Rabea al-Adawiya four-finger slogan, and other flyers with protest slogans.

The defendants denied all charges against them, stressing that they have not committed any acts of violence and were arrested randomly during the events.

West Cairo Prosecution sent another 22 students to 15 days imprisonment for involvement in the Sunday clashes on charges of rioting and the possession of Molotov cocktails and bladed weapons.

The 94 defendants also face the charges of inciting riots, crowding, thuggery, joining an armed terrorist group aiming to disrupt public security, possession of firearms, birdshots and fireworks, damaging public and private property, burning buildings at Al-Azhar, assaulting working employees, disrupting traffic, assaulting police forces and resisting authorities.

The Appellate Disciplinary Board of the Dar al-Elom faculty of Al-Azhar announced their support on Monday of the primary disciplinary board's decision to dismiss five pro-MB students who assaulted former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa during his visit to the institution.

Clashes between students and security forces have escalated in recent weeks as students protest last week's decision to label the Brotherhood as a terrorist group, as well as the deaths and detentions of fellow students.
