Presidency, cabinet agree not to issue counter-terrorism act

Interim President Adly Mansour met with Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy for few hours at Ettihadiya Palace on Saturday to mull a government proposal not to issue new act to counter terrorism and resort to existing articles in the penal code, with which terrorism was combated in the nineties, an informed source from presidency said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said Beblawy reviewed the cabinet decision taken on Wednesday which announced the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group. He added that “the decision does not need to be ratified by presidents to be enforced.”

Beblawy also reviewed a security report during the meeting on dealing with the growing violence by the Brotherhood especially at universities as well as Interior Ministry efforts to control the situations, the source said. Beblawy added that police will be present inside universities during the exams for security and will return back to outside the universities once exams are finished.

Meanwhile, a senior cabinet source said the announcement of the Brotherhood as a terrorist group applies only on the group and its international organization but not its political arm the Freedom and Justice Party. Administrative Court will review by mid February lawsuit to dissolve the party, the source added.
