Clashes in Al-Azhar University stop, police withdraw

A state of cautious calm has prevailed on the Al-Azhar University campus after security forces withdrew following clashes with pro-Morsy students stopped.

Police had stormed the campus on Tuesday after students allegedly shut down faculty buildings and burned the cafeteria.

At least five people have been injured in the unrest.

Pro-Muslim Brotherhood protests have swept universities since the new academic year started in September.

Their demands include the return of deposed president Mohamed Morsy and the release of fellow students who were arrested in recent months. Daily battles between students and police have left a number of students dead.
