Egypt-Saudi power link-up project signed

Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy attended the signing ceremony of an agreement of the Egyptian-Saudi electricity linkage project Thursday, along with Electricity and Energy Minister Ahmed Imam and Saudi Electricity and Water Minister Abdullah al-Hassin, according to Egyptian state television's website.

The project will lead to the exchange of 3,000 megawatts of electricity during peak hours of consumption–during the day in Saudi Arabia and around sunset in Egypt.

The total cost is roughly US$1.6 billion, $610 million of which is Egypt's share. Contributing entities include European Development Partners, the Arab Fund for Economic Development and the World Bank.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
