Mohamed Badie, recently-elected leader of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) opposition movement, plans to convene a meeting of the group’s authoritative Guidance Bureau on Wednesday to discuss ways of cooperating with the leftist Tagammu opposition party.
Representatives of the two groups met earlier in Damietta for the same purpose.
"It was constructive," Guidance Bureau member Mohamed Bishr said of the earlier meeting. "We share the same views on the Palestinian cause and the need for constitutional reform, the abolition of the state of emergency and free elections."
"There’s no reason why both groups shouldn’t capitalize on our common views," said MB Secretary General Mahmoud Hussein.
Relations between the two groups have been historically tense, if not hostile. Tagammu’s long time leader Refaat el-Said had repeatedly lashed out against the Brothers, accusing them of "fascism and aiding terrorism."
