Amr Moussa, chief of the 50-member committee tasked with amending the constitution, blamed the disturbance in relations between Egypt and US on the latter’s politics, which have been dealing for five years with the region’s future through “the new Middle East” principle.
He added that the US tries to push change through creative chaos without expecting that the society would change from inside.
“One of the tension reasons is preserving the Israeli interests and aids that US administration handle through the stick and carrot principle,” Moussa told the Kuwaiti Al-Jarida newspaper on Wednesday.
“What disturbed the US mentality is that they never expected any role from the Egyptian people,” he said, referring to the new tools of the Arab and Middle East political scene, that Americans did not expect, which caused shock by the US administration in dealing with the Arab World.
Moussa provided evidence on change in Arab stance toward the US hegemony by the free Arab and international stance of Saudi Arabia and Emirates.
His in interview, however, Moussa failed to mention the main events that triggered fury from US officials, such as the artbirary arrests of American non-governmental workers, the failure to protect the American embassy from protesters and the killing of over 600 unarmed Muslim Brotherhood protesters in what Human Rights Watch called “the most serious incident of mass unlawful killings in modern Egyptian history.”
Regarding possibility that Russia would support Egypt instead of the US, Moussa said, “Russia is not an alternative for the US. The world does not have two poles. However, Moscow can react with us more smoothly.”
