UN office attacked in western Afghanistan

Kabul–A United Nations office was attacked Saturday in western Afghanistan, officials said.

Dan McNorton, a spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, said the organization was aware of an incident and an attack at the UN office just outside Herat city. He said the incident was ongoing and the UN was working closely with local authorities.

A reporter for The Associated Press at the scene said a suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed car blew up the entrance to the office. Afghan police officials at the scene said militants wearing uniforms then entered the building, which has been surrounded by Afghan and NATO troops.

The reporter said he has heard several blasts at the site.
