Egyptian Television is currently examining the possibility of broadcasting a religious satellite channel to present moderate Islam, said the President of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, Osama al-Sheikh.
The presenters on the new channel will all be preachers accredited by Al-Azhar.
This announcement came after the government shut down a number of religious satellite channels which it has accused of promoting sorcery, extremist views and inciting sectarianism.
Al-Sheikh said the matter is still under consideration and will be implemented in cooperation with Al-Azhar. He added that the content will be similar to that currently viewed on Egyptian Television.
He added that if the new channel does not get set up, then the content broadcast currently on television will be reviewed. He said that the government is not against religious channels per se but rather opposes the type of content broadcast on some of these channels, which he said called for government intervention.
He also said that al-Magd, Resala and Iqraa are good examples of moderate religious channels.
