An army lieutenant was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at the Ezzedine checkpoint on the Cairo-Ismailia desert road at dawn Thursday.
The lieutenant has been named as Mohamed Hassan.
The officer's body has reportedly been transferred to a morgue.
Mohamed al-Anani, head of Ismailia Security Directorate, reported that unknown attackers fired at the checkpoint from a mango farm close by.
Hassan suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and died before reaching the hospital, Anani said, referring to a report from a detective at an Ismailia police station.
Police and army troops combed the area following the incident. The military prosecution has been notified to investigate the incident.
