The U.S. Embassy in Cairo has announced that it will be closed from Monday to Saturday, and it has asked that its citizens in Egypt contact the Embassy switchboard at 02-2797-3300 if they require any emergency assistance.
In a statement entitled “Security Message for U.S. Citizens No. 66,” the embassy explained that the U.S. State Department has instructed certain US embassies and consulates to close for several days but that these institutions will continue to provide emergency services for American citizens.
“The [US] State Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps,” the statement continued.
The United States and several other Western countries have decided to close their embassies in a number of countries on Sunday, as a precaution against potential al-Qaeda attacks targeting them.
