UNICEF has expressed concerns over photos taken of children at protests staged by supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsy at Rabaa al-Adaweya Square, east of Cairo.
Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, said in a statement, “Children should not be victim nor witness of violence and their rights should be respected under any circumstances.”
“When children are arrested they must be protected according to the National Child Law. They must not be mistreated nor detained with adults and their rights to legal assistance must be fully secured,” he added.
UNICEF called on Egyptians and political groups not to use children as a tool for achieving political purposes, but to protect them from potential harm.
