Unknown gunmen fire on Sinai checkpoint for 44th time

Unknown gunmen fired on the security checkpoint at al-Reesa on the Arish-Rafah international road in North Sinai on Thursday, marking the 44th attack on the position amid escalating violence in the region.

Security forces were forced to return fire and follow the attackers.

No casualties were reported.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen targeted the checkpoint from nearby hilly terrain. Police and army troops exchanged fire.

The al-Reesa checkpoint, a joint police and military position, had been targeted 43 times since Egypt's 25 January revolution.

Attacks against security forces by unknown gunmen have sharply increased since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsy on 3 July. Armed forces have launched military operations against suspected terrorists in the Sinai Peninsula.

Several security personnel as well as civilians have been killed over the past three weeks as a result of the attacks.
