The government has adopted a number of measures aimed to encourage meat, poultry and rice importation, sources confirmed. The move is considered an effort to offset surging prices of red and white meat as well as vegetables.
The measures seek to fill a gap of 100,000 tonnes of subsidized rice, caused by unprecedented local price hikes.
Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm expressed his disapproval of a tariff imposition on basic commodities, arguing such policy proved disastrous over the past decades. The government is tightening oversight on the market with the aim of curbing the price increases, he added.
