The Egyptian public prosecution has begun questioning 11 Tunisian Esperance fans arrested Sunday for assaulting several policemen following a match with Ahly in the first leg of the African Champions League semifinals held in Cairo, judicial sources said.
Ahly won the match 2-1. The two teams will meet again on 16 October in Tunisia.
Ten police officers were injured in the clashes.
The Tunisian spectators lit flares–which are banned in Egyptian stadiums–and started ripping out the seats and throwing them onto the pitch, according to security sources.
Should Ahly lose with a one-goal difference while registering one goal in the upcoming match, it will secure a place in the finals. Esperance needs at least a 1-0 win to advance.
Riots are common in football matches between north African teams.
FIFA imposed a penalty on Egypt in May after Egyptian fans attacked a bus carrying the Algerian national team. The Algerians were in Egypt to play a key 2010 World Cup qualifying match.
