The Ministry of Interior Affairs Prison Sector has started a second phase of counseling services and AIDS examinations inside prisons, after programs implemented in four prisons in Fayoum, al-Wadi al-Gadeed, Wadi al-Natroun and Borg al-Arab were successful.
The prison sector's new project, known as “Prison Doctors,” aims to treat prisoners with AIDS and raise awareness of drug addiction and AIDS.
Three protocols were signed between the ministers of interior and higher education at the prison al-Qanater al-Khaireya to enhance the capacities of prison doctors and provide health care for prisoners. Protocols include new coordination between the prison sector, university hospitals, the Ministry of Health’s National AIDS Programme (NAP), the United Nations regional office and the International Society of Addiction Medicine in Canada (ISAM)
The head of the prison sector, Atef Sherif, said signing these protocols will help the prison sector care for drug addicts and AIDS patients.
