March to cathedral planned as second victim ID’d

A Cairo Security Directorate source said Mondays that the second person killed during clashes around St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo’s Abbasseya neighborhood Sunday had been identified, without identifying the person by name.

The Ministry of Health had earlier identified the first victim as 30-year-old Mahrous Hanna Ibrahim.

The source said the body was identified by the Interior Ministry through fingerprints, which matched those of a 26-year old man from Ezbet Abu Qarn.

The source also claimed that the man was charged six years ago with attempted theft, and further alleged that the death was the result of the victim falling from the cathedral’s wall while trying to steal a surveillance camera.

The clashes broke out during a funeral procession for four Coptic Christians who were killed Friday in clashes with Muslims in Khosous, Qalyubiya. The clashes reportedly broke out after a group of boys spray-painted graffiti on the walls of an Islamic school.

Meanwhile, several political parties have announced a mass rally 5 pm Tuesday in front of the al-Fateh Mosque in Ramses Square that will then march to the cathedral.

In a statement Monday, the parties, which include the Dostour, Free Egyptians, Freedom Egypt and the Socialist Popular Alliance Parties as well as the Popular Current, said the march will denounce the clashes deliver a message that Egyptians will not be divided based on religious reasons and will resume the revolution until its goals are fulfilled.

The parties also called for Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and the security chiefs of Cairo and Qalyubiya to be dismissed and brought to trial, and blamed President Mohamed Morsy for sectarian violence against minorities and other innocent people.
