President to honor Egypt’s youth football team after championship win

Egypt’s youth football team arrived at Cairo airport Saturday crowned with the African Nations Cup. The sports minister, the Egyptian Football Association board of directors and many fans greeted the team when it arrived.

“The president is honoring the team Monday,” Tharwat Sweilam, CEO of the football association, told Modern Sport channel Sunday. “And we are meeting with the minister to discuss bonuses for the players.”

The team, whose members are under 20, beat its Ghanaian counterpart 5–4 with penalty kicks, after tying 1–1 during overtime, in the final match of the tournament, which concluded Saturday in Algiers.

It is Egypt’s fourth title in the history of the championship, versus three titles for Ghana, while the Nigerian team still holds the largest number of titles — six. Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, Congo and Angola each hold one title.
