The Muslim Brotherhood lost control of the Pharmacists Syndicate Friday after its electoral list, the Egypt’s Pharmacists Coalition, lost internal elections to the Professionals Pharmacists list, comprised primarily of liberal and secular members.
Al-Masry Al-Youm had reported members from different parties, including the Free Egyptians, the Dostour and the Strong Egypt Parties, formed an alliance in order to wrest control of the syndicate from Brotherhood members.
The elections proceeded calmly, under full judicial supervision and monitoring by civil society organizations. Turnout was low due to protests and the sandstorm that hit Cairo Friday.
The Professionals Pharmacists list gained 10 seats out of a total of 12, while the Muslim Brotherhood claimed only the other two seats in the election.
An official source at the supreme committee supervising the elections said that the percentage of voter turnout among members was 12 percent.
Mohamed Abdel Gawad, the syndicate head, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the official results will be announced next Friday during the general assembly meeting, followed by the formation of a new general bureau.
