Thousands of protesters marched Saturday in the funeral procession of Hossam Eddin Abdel Azim, the protester who was killed Friday night in Mansoura.
Al-Masry Al-Youm quoted medical sources at Mansoura International Hospital as saying on Saturday morning that Azim, 35, was killed after being run over by an armored police vehicle.
Dozens of protesters hurled stones at the Daqahlia Governorate prison as the funeral passed by. One police officer responded by firing tear gas at the protesters before commanders intervened and prevented other officers from responding.
The protesters chanted slogans demanding the toppling the regime and the execution of President Mohamed Morsy.
At least other 40 people had been injured during clashes overnight.
State-run news agency MENA said the clashes escalated after Azim was killed in the vicinity of 6th of October Square, where the Daqahlia governorate headquarters and the Daqahlia Security Directorate sub-building are located. Riot police were deployed Friday evening, firing tear gas to prevent protesters from storming the two buildings.
The injured include 10 police officers, with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to birdshot wounds. Ambulances took the injured to Mansoura International Public Hospital and Mansoura Public Hospital.
Popular Current spokesperson Heba Yassin said that severe clashes occurred near the party’s headquarters in Mansoura as well, adding that security forces had resorted to “severe violence.”
She added that it was strange that the party’s headquarters were targeted, saying that the party supports civil disobedience calls in the city.
Popular Current founder Hamdeen Sabbahi described the events in Mansoura as “complete crime” and “bloodshed and [a] violation to the dignity of every Egyptian.”
