Jama’a al-Islamiya on Monday called on citizens to donate to a million-man demonstration dubbed “Together against Violence” and slated for 15 February, by depositing money in the private account of the movement’s political arm, the Construction and Development Party.
The Salafi-oriented group called on all national, revolutionary and Islamic forces to participate in the protest so everybody says, “No to violence,” describing the demands of the protest as “popular.”
Jama’a al-Islamiya stressed, in a statement, the need to apply the law firmly while protecting human rights, and called for the immediate issuance of presidential decisions to support the poor and achieve social justice.
Party media adviser Khaled al-Sherif said all Islamist forces are invited to join the demonstration. “We have hung posters in Cairo and other governorates to invite the public to participate,” he said. “The aim is to preserve the security and stability of the country, consolidate democracy, and end violence and division in the country.”
“Popular committees will protect the demonstrators,” he said, adding that marches would start from mosques around Cairo University, which have been the site of Islamist rallies in recent months.
Jama'a al-Islamiya had called for the million-man protest earlier, before delaying it from Friday 8 February by a week.
