The Ministry of Islamic Endowments is finalizing the appointments of 3000 new imams in provinces throughout Egypt, according to the ministry’s undersecretary Salem Abdel Galeel.
During a conference organized by the Egyptian Fruit Development Association in Alexandria on Monday, Abdel Galeel said the appointments are intended to offset the current shortage of imams. All those selected passed a test administered by the ministry.
Abdel Galeel commented on the "International Burn-a-Koran Day" campaign led by American Terry Jones, saying the pastor should be tried as a terrorist since his threat fuels intellectual extremism, which, in Abdel Galeel's view, is the worst sort of terrorism.
