President Mohamed Morsy and his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, stressed during a phone call the necessity of achieving international consensus to prevent continued Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.
The Iranian president praised Morsy’s efforts to restore calm and security to Gaza, the Iranian news agency IRNA said Monday.
“Our religious and humanitarian duties oblige us to try to prevent the further massacre of defenseless Palestinians, and restore tranquility and sustainable security in the region and throughout the entire Palestinian territories,” IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.
Ahmadinejad also pointed to mounting concerns on the regional and international levels caused by the Israeli air campaign on Gaza, calling for an initiative to stop “Zionist crimes” in the strip.
“It is necessary that all-out efforts should be made for putting an end to the killing and massacre of women, children and the oppressed people of Gaza and Palestine,” Ahmadinejad said.
IRNA also quoted Morsy as saying that he has been contacting several international leaders to achieve a unified stance on Israel's “aggression.”
The death toll in an Israeli air campaign against militants in Gaza rose to 87 early Monday, with hundreds injured — many of them children. The operation began with the targeted killing of Hamas military chief Ahmed al-Jabari Wednesday.
