17 killed in car crash in 6 October

Seventeen people were killed Saturday in a road crash on the Wahat road in 6th of October City, 50 kilometers west of Cairo.

Sources told the German news agency DPA that the accident may have been caused by speeding.

The crash took place a day after a train crashed into a bus Saturday, killing 51, mostly children, and injuring another 13 in Assiut Governorate, 375 kilometers south of Cairo.

The accidents coincide with the UN Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on 18 November.

“This year, the world’s roads have claimed some 1.2 million lives. Added to the fatalities are the more than 50 million people injured each year — many of them now condemned to enduring physical disabilities and psychological trauma for the rest of their days,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in his message.

“Around 90 percent of road traffic deaths and injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries. Most of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. The World Health Organization warns that, without urgent action, road traffic injuries will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030,” he added.
