Morsy spokesperson denies claims Shura Council would legislate

Presidential spokesperson Yasser Ali said the president has no intention of granting the Shura Council legislative powers.

The statement followed calls by Mohamed Mahsoub Abdel Meguid, the minister of state for parliamentary affairs, to vest such powers in the upper house of Parliament until a new constitution can be drafted and new elections held for the lower house.

“There is absolutely no intention to transfer legislative powers to the Shura Council. The president had previously said he would not resort to legislation in the absence of the Parliament except in the case of a pressing need and within the tightest limits,” Ali said in a statement published on Facebook.

The Supreme Constitutional Court had ordered the lower house of parliament dissolved on 14 June after finding fault with an election law.
