Prosecutors investigating clashes that broke out between Muslim and Christian residents of the village of Bahgoura in the southern Naga Hammadi province last Thursday have revealed that 12 Christian-owned homes and two Christian-owned shops were set on fire during the disturbances, along with one Muslim-owned shop. No human injuries, however, were reported.
More than 37 complaints have so far been filed at the local police station for the destruction of 34 shops, six automobiles, two ambulances and six motorcycles.
During the clashes, police arrested nine Muslim and six Christian residents.
Calm has since been restored in the village and shops have reopened. Nevertheless, police have maintained a heavy security presence in and around the area.
