Eighty-three tourist establishments and resorts have filled in parts of the Red Sea, a report issued by Red Sea branch of the Environmental Affairs Agency has revealed.
The report said these establishments have encroached on marine life, ebb and tide areas, and coral reefs. Buildings have also been constructed without permits.
The report, which was submitted to Minister of Environment Maged George, said the resulting environmental losses are estimated at 134,000 meters. The fines for this damage, which occurred between 2004 and 2011, total LE12 million.
The violators have been referred for prosecution, and some have already been sentenced.
