The criminal court in the Upper Egyptian province of Minya sentenced eight supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi to death and 83 others to life in prison on Tuesday over charges of setting the Samalut police station on fire, resulting in the death of a police officer.
The ruling also included prison sentences ranging from five to 15 years for 23 other people. Five defendants were acquitted.
The death verdicts, issued in August, were confirmed today after approval from the Grand Mufti of Egypt, a judicial measure for death penalties that is not binding in court.
