8 injured in clashes between Zagazig residents, Shafiq supporters

Eight people were injured on Wednesday in the city of Zagazig, Sharqiya Governorate, during clashes between residents and supporters of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq.

The clashes began when Shafiq supporters hired musicians and began celebrating in the streets late Tuesday night as a declaration of Shafiq’s victory in the presidential election.

Shafiq's campaign in Sharqiya had mobilized about 500 supporters and organized a march from the campaign's headquarters in the Montazah neighborhood of Zagazig. They passed through Jalaa Street in the Sagha neighborhood playing patriotic songs over loud speakers.

Neighborhood residents responded by throwing stones at the marchers, injuring eight. The attackers chanted, “Feloul, feloul [remnants of the Mubarak regime], stay home forever.”

Meanwhile, Sami Abdul Rauf, secretary general of the National Forces Union in Sharqiya, denied the participation of any union members or Muslim Brotherhood members in the clashes, as rumored. He stressed that all national forces, including the youth unions, had gone to Tahrir Square early on Tuesday to participate in demonstrations against the supplement to the Constitutional Declaration passed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces earlier this week.
