Eight suspected extremists were killed and six others injured in air strikes by Apache helicopters in North Sinai Sheikh Zuwayed region.
Security forces maintained their presence in North Sinai’s major roads, conducting searches in coastal areas and inspecting the cars passing in the area.
Egypt’s military has been intensifying its operations in the restive Sinai Peninsula where extremist groups have become more active since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy. Sinai-based armed groups have claimed responsibility for most of the deadly attacks carried out against the security forces in the peninsula.
Army statements have not revealed the identities of the extremists killed in the raid.
