Officials from the state-run Telegram Authority said they had received some 790,000 telegrams sent by Egyptian citizens wanting to congratulate President Hosni Mubarak for his recent recovery from a surgical operation he underwent in Germany last month.
Authority Chairman Ahmed Shawqi said he was instructed to send half of the telegrams to the presidential palace and the other half to the headquarters of Mubarak’s ruling National Democratic Party.
"Notably, after congratulating the president, some telegrams also included petitions for jobs or complaints against particular government officials," Shawqi said.
Prices charged for telegrams remained the same. "We charged the usual 10 piasters per word," said Shawqi.
