Medhat Hosny, director of the Hepatic Viruses department of the Kabbari General Hospital in Alexandria, said in a statement on Thursday that hepatitis C patients showed a 93 percent positive response rate to the American drug Sovaldi on Thursday, versus 91.3 percent two weeks ago.
He also said 51 patients were 100 percent cured after a three-month treatment, as tests proved that the virus has disappeared. “They will be examined again in six months,” he said. “If the virus is not detected then, we will declare them fully cured.”
Hosny said 373 out of 400 patients that have been treated with the drug over a period of four weeks showed a positive response rate of 93 percent. Twenty-seven others showed a 50 percent positive response rate over a one-month treatment course.
The drug has been given to 810 patients since mid-October.
