A military source said that the armed forces have finished constructing 45 percent of the wall surrounding the Suez Canal at its southern entrance.
Major General Mohamed Ali Shams Eddin, commander of the canal's southern entrance security troops, said that the wall is composed of rocks and that it is being built on the eastern and western banks of the canal.
Eddin said it will be 65 km long and will cost LE150 million. He expected the construction to be finished within a few months but did not give a specific completion date. Eddin said that the wall is being built to protect the canal from attacks.
In related news, a security source said that the second field army troops are building a wall similar to that being built in Suez around the canal at Ismailia and Port Said governerates. The walls are being built out of the same materials, he said and also did not give a specific date of completion.
