Public Prosecution referred four employees of the Egyptian Railway Authority to the criminal court on Thursday, after accusing each of accidental involvement in turning over a train in al-Marazeq village of Giza, in July.
The incident, which resulted in the injury of 57 passengers, was caused by a technical error resulting from a sudden reduction of speed during the train’s transfer to another set of rails, according to the prosecution.
The incident reportedly caused losses at LE4.5 million.
The prosecution held two electric signal technicians and two tower controllers responsible for the incident. Investigations found that the four employees improperly used the train’s controllers, causing it to overturn.
The investigation acquitted the train driver and stationmaster of any responsibility for the incident.
