Thirty-one detainees escaped from the New Cairo police station on Thursday. Security forces have arrested 24 of them and returned them to custody.
Upon opening the door to the custody area to inform some of the prisoners that they had visitors, police officers were surprised by detainees, who pushed through the door and fled the police station.
Police are currently combing the area for the rest.
Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy has decided to refer the guards in charge of the police station to be investigated over the incident.
The security debacle follows political calls for police reform that have arisen in the wake of the 25 January revolution.
