26 pro-Morsy Azhar students face trial for alleged rioting

A Nasr City court held a hearing on Wednesday in the case of 26 pro-Morsy students at Al-Azhar University who are accused of rioting inside the university's campus.

This was the second hearing of the trial and it was dedicated to examining the case, and hearing the defense.

During the first hearing, the prosecutor demanded the maximum penalty for the students.

The students are on trial for alleged vandalism and allegedly causing violent incidents that took place inside and on the outskirts of the Al-Azhar campus in November.

Pro-Muslim Brotherhood protests have swept universities since the new academic year started in September.

Their demands include the return of deposed president Mohamed Morsy and the release of fellow students who were arrested in recent months. Daily battles between students and police have left a number of students dead.
