Gunmen attacked a police truck on Thursday as it was transferring prisoners from the Shebin district to the district of Tokh in the Qalyubiya Governorate, north of Cairo.
Security sources said a number of armed men riding on motorcycles and in a truck fired at the police transport vehicle and forced the driver to stop.
During the ensuing chase, security guards in the prisoner truck notified the police, who were dispatched to the area of the attack. By the time they arrived, however, the unidentified attackers had already helped two prisoners escape.
Qalyubiya Security Director Salim Ahmed Naghy said the prisoners in the police truck had been convicted of robbery and rape and were on their way to the Banha Prison to serve their sentences.
Naghy said that nobody was killed in the attack.
The public prosecutor sent a team to inspect the scene, and found a large number of spent bullet casings.
