18,000 members may lose jobs: tour guides union

About 18,000 tour guides who are members of the tour guides union may lose their jobs due to low hotel occupancy rates as well as decreased daily wages that reach LE100 a day and because tour agencies are not abiding by the union's regulations.

A tour guide works an average of 15 to 20 days a month.

Tour companies employ foreign tour guides, which violates the Manpower and the Tourism Ministry's decision not to employ foreign tour guides, the tour guides union said on Thursday.

The tour guides union filed complaints to the Tourism Ministry against the tour companies violating the agreement.

The ban of flights coming from Russia and the UK will affect tour guides as the number of visitors to archaeological sites will decrease, said head of the Red Sea tour guides Bashar Abu Taleb.

Bashar called for activating the ministerial decision which set the daily wage of a tour guide at LE300, pointing out that tour companies are not applyling the decision. Tour companies give tour guides LE100 a day instead, he said.
