Approximately 15,000 members of fishermen associations in the Red Sea governorate have rejected the decision by the General Authority for Fish Resources Development to ban fishing in the Suez and Aqaba gulfs, as well as the Hurghada and Red Sea islands, from May until the end of September.
They argued that they do not have other sources of living, saying that the decision will serve the interests of the big ships coming from outside the Red Sea and fish importers.
Abdel Rahman Mahmoud, head of the fishermen in Qusair city, said the decision is 'unfair' and illogical. The only ones affected will be the owners of small boats.
“We have families and children that we need to feed. We have requirements for living. We cannot survive three months without sustenance,” he added.
