13 prison deaths in November: NGO

Deaths inside Egyptian prisons, due to torture and medical negligence, stood at 13 in November alone, a NGO said Wednesday, after compiling media reports. The Interior Ministry, meanwhile, faces increasing criticism and public anger over the alleged extra-judicial arrest and fatal torture of detainees over the past two weeks.

Six of the deaths occurred in Cairo, according to a list compiled by El Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence.

Cases of general police torture stood at 42 in November, out of which 13 were incidents in which detainees were collectively tortured, the center said.

It added that 75 cases were recorded in which detainees were subjected to medical negligence and bad jail conditions.

Additionally, police used violence against citizens outside police stations in 14 instances, El-Nadeem Center said.

The report also covered the Sudanese migrants who were killed while attempting to cross Egypt’s borders to Israel last month, as well as other Sudanese people who claimed to have been subjected to torture within Egypt.
